The disc brake caliper is the hydraulic clamp at the centre of your disc brake system. Every time you press the brake pedal, brake fluid pressure forces the caliper's pistons outward, squeezing the brake pads against the rotor and generating the friction that stops your vehicle. A seized, leaking, or sticking caliper interferes with that process at the source, causing uneven braking, accelerated pad and rotor wear, and pulling to one side that worsens over time.
Caliper problems develop gradually and are frequently mistaken for pad or rotor wear. These signs point specifically to caliper issues:
New OEM-specification calipers are brand-new units manufactured to the exact piston dimensions, seal specifications, and material tolerances of the original factory part. They offer the longest service life and are the strongest choice for higher-mileage vehicles where a remanufactured core may carry residual bore wear, or for vehicles operated in high-corrosion environments like coastal or heavily salted urban roads.
Remanufactured calipers are original caliper housings completely disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and rebuilt with new pistons, seals, boots, and hardware. Quality remanufactured units from reputable suppliers perform identically to new calipers for most replacement applications and offer excellent value where the original housing bore condition is sound.
Choosing between new and remanufactured is not always straightforward, and GeoBrakes stocks both to give you the right option for your vehicle and budget. As an authorized retailer of Cardone, EBC, Raybestos, and other trusted brands, every caliper purchase carries the full manufacturer warranty, not a third-party or in-house limited warranty. Our vehicle selector confirms the correct caliper for your year, make, model, and axle position, including correct left or right hand fitment, before you place your order.
Q: Should I replace brake calipers in pairs?
A: It is generally recommended to replace calipers as an axle pair, both left and right on the same axle, to maintain balanced braking. If one caliper has failed due to age, corrosion, or piston seizure, the caliper on the opposite side has experienced the same service conditions and is likely at a similar stage of wear.
Q: How long do disc brake calipers typically last in US?
A: Calipers typically last 100,000 to 150,000 kilometres, but American road salt and moisture accelerate corrosion of caliper guide pins, slide pins, and piston seal boots, often causing premature failure well before that figure. Annual brake inspections, including checking guide pin condition, help catch developing caliper issues early.
Q: Can a sticking caliper damage my brake pads and rotors?
A: Yes. A caliper that does not fully retract keeps the brake pad in partial contact with the rotor between stops, generating constant friction and heat. This rapidly wears both the pad and rotor surface, causes brake fade under sustained use, and generates enough heat buildup to damage the adjacent brake hose and wheel bearing over time.
